How Herbicides Are Applied to Bushes & Trees

A practical comparison of application routes before site-specific product selection.

Application method must match the confirmed plant, its growth stage, the site and the current registered label.

Foliar application

A suitable mixture is applied as a full-cover spray to actively growing foliage. Plant height, density, weather, spray quality and coverage determine whether foliar treatment is practical.

Cut-stump treatment

Stems are cut low and the current label is followed for treatment of the fresh cut surface or cambial region. Multiple stems normally require attention individually.

Basal-stem treatment

The lower stem, exposed roots or root crown are wetted with the label-specified mixture and carrier. The suitable height and stem diameter depend on the product label.

Soil-applied treatment

Liquid or granular material is placed in the root zone where the label permits. Soil texture, rainfall, drainage, slope and roots of desirable woody plants are critical.

Frill and stem methods

Label-defined cuts or treatments place herbicide into conducting tissue. These methods require careful placement and may not be relevant to every species.

Safety: Do not treat an unconfirmed plant or copy a dosage from another species. Read the current label before use and protect water, people, animals, crops and desirable vegetation.
